Acupuncture is an ancient system of health therapy that has been continuously refined during its 4,500 year history. It uses fine needles inserted into specific points in the body to balance the body, mind and spirit.
Acupuncture originated in the Far East and is now widely practiced in the West. It is one of the main components of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete medical system able to treat disease in its many forms.
Sterile needles are inserted into the body at carefully selected points to stimulate the body’s own healing processes. The needles we use are extremely fine, single-use needles, which are disposed of at the end of each treatment. Most patients are not aware of the needles once they have been inserted, and describe the feeling of the needles being inserted as “a small scratch”, “mosquito bite” or “pin prick”.
The philosophy behind the treatment is that the acupressure points have high electrical conductivity through which “qi” (pronounced “chee”) flows. The flow of energy can be blocked in many ways, for example through trauma to muscle, organs, emotional upset, poor diet and stress.
Accessing each patient as an individual is at the core of acupuncture treatment and this facilitates the body to rebalance and repair itself. Many people also successfully use acupuncture for weight loss.

There is a large body of scientific data from studies that seeks to explain the mechanisms of acupuncture. Current data shows that acupuncture promotes the production of “endorphins’ that relieve pain, improve the immune system, regulate blood flow and hormones, is anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic, and improves well being.
Acupuncture has been used in the Western world for pain management since the 1970s. Research and evidence based studies have shown that acupuncture is also effective in treating many medical disorders.
The benefits of acupuncture in NZ are recognised by the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) for injury rehabilitation and its effective treatment outcomes.
