Pregnancy Acupuncture has been observed to help soften the cervix and promote a more efficient labour. A study has found that woman who received acupuncture prior to birthing; their labour was shortened by an average of 1.5 hours.
Pregnancy Acupuncture produces an endorphin release which can be described as morphine like compounds. Over the course of receiving pre labour acupuncture treatments, endorphins are built up and are available to be used when labour begins, which reduces the pain / discomfort of labour. A course of pre labour acupuncture also acts like a training programme for the pituitary gland, the gland that produces the pain relieving endorphins. The more acupuncture you receive the fitter and more efficient your glands will produce the endorphins and assist you in an efficient labour. Endorphins also reduce stress and produce feelings of happiness and overall wellbeing which is beneficial to both mother and baby.
Pregnancy Acupuncture offers a range of positive effects beyond reducing the time spent in labour. Midwives have reported that a reduced rate of intervention is noted for women who have received pre labour acupuncture.
Pregnancy Acupuncture is safe and drug free and can also be used to relieve many common conditions that occur during pregnancy. Such as nausea, heartburn, fatigue and exhaustion, reducing swelling, relieving pelvic pain, turning breech babies and induction / promoting labour. During labour there are specific acupressure points that can be used to support and relieve the birthing process.
At MaxWell Clinic we offer acupuncture during your pregnancy and we have developed a pre labour acupuncture package, where six weekly acupuncture treatments prior to the estimated due date are recommended. Your birthing partner is welcome to come and learn the acupressure points which will support you during your labour.
“At 35 weeks, we discovered that our baby was breech and I was booked for a session at the hospital where doctors would try to turn our baby to the correct position. I approached Justin for his treatment and guidance; he also advised us what we could do at home ourselves to encourage the baby to turn. Our scan showed the baby had turned and was no longer breech and our midwife confirmed that our baby was now in an ideal position. We would like to thank Justin for his treatment and guidance and would highly recommend him.” Nidhi
“At 41 weeks pregnant with the thought of a hospital induction looming I went to MaxWell Clinic to see Justin Dwen for some induction acupuncture. Over the course of a week I had a number of treatments gaining in intensity each time. I found Justin to be very professional in his approach to the treatments and also his sharing of tips and tricks for labour were invaluable, in particular breathing techniques and acupressure points. After my final and most intense acupuncture session, I went into labour negating the need for a hospital induction. I would highly recommend Justin at MaxWell Clinic to anyone who is currently pregnant. He is a fountain of knowledge and my only regret is that I didn’t start the sessions earlier in the third trimester to get the full benefits that I believe acupuncture can achieve.” Melissa
“During my first pregnancy I suffered ongoing chronic back and pelvis pain however believed (like many woman) that this was just a normal part of pregnancy and I struggled throughout my entire pregnancy with this pain. This pregnancy resulted in a 40 hour labour with every complication imaginable.
At approximately 24 weeks into my second pregnancy my pelvis and lower back pain returned, this time I would describe it as being extremely sore to the point that I was waking up to twenty times a night because of the pain. I sought treatment from an Osteopath which helped immensely with the back pain however nothing they did improved my pelvis pain in the slightest.
My first appointment with Justin Dwen was approximately one hour, during this time he asked numerous questions regarding my medical background, pregnancy and problems I was currently suffering from. He was very thorough and was more than happy to answer my huge number of questions. I found Justin to be very personable, professional and extremely friendly.
Once Justin started inserting the needles I was incredibly surprised at how little it hurt, it was only a small pinching feeling followed by a strange pulling sensation when he manipulated the needles.
After just one treatment the right side of my pelvis was 100% better, I only noticed a small improvement on the left side though. Throughout the following three weeks I saw Justin four times, each time my pelvis improved more. I was pleasantly surprised that the right side of my pelvis has remained entirely pain free since the first treatment.
Following my first birth which was incredibly difficult and somewhat traumatic I was nervous about the second birth however following Justin’s treatments I now view the birth positively and am excited about it.
I would highly recommend Justin Dwen to anyone suffering with problems of any sort during pregnancy.” Chantelle

I am so glad that my son recommended that I see you for acupuncture to help with my lower back pain. I must admit that I was quite skeptical at first as I have had regular treatment for this but still the pain would come back. After seeing you my back feels so much better and I feel great and energized. I look forward to our next acupuncture session.David Read More
